ABOUT: The Castaño family owns over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO in south-eastern Spain. 80% of these vineyards are planted with the native Monastrell variety. The grapes for Coleccion are harvested from 70 year old Monastrell bush vines and 32 year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The vineyard for Colección has a very different microclimate from the rest of the region which is clearly continental. It has minimum temperatures of -10°C in winter and up to 42°C in summer. The 2015 vintage was hand harvested and after a 16 day fermentation, aged for 10 months in oak barrels 80% of which were French and 20% American oak, a third of which were new. The resulting wine is one of great character and finesse.
