ABOUT: This small winery was established in 2007 by brothers Peter-Allan and Andrew Finlayson. Their father, Peter, was a pioneer in the production of cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at Bouchard Finlayson, so after university it seemed a natural progression for the boys to return home to source fruit from Hemel-en-Aarde valley to start their own label. Crystallum is now one of the most highly regarded wineries in South Africa, yet the Finlaysons strive continuously to make a better and better wines.
The Agnes Chardonnay is named after their Great Grandmother, Agnes Floyd a woman who had great resilience and strength of character. Crystallum’s 2020 vintage is fuller bodied than previous vintages and has a more exotic nose and palate. Grapes were sourced from vineyards in both the Hemel-en-Aarde and Overberg regions. The wine was naturally fermented (indigenous yeasts) in 228 and 500litre French oak barrels where it then remained for 9 months before bottling. A beautiful wine to drink, it will age well up to 2028 and possibly beyond if you can be disciplined enough to put some away.
