Sandys Mixed Wine Case Selections

We’ve always had your seafood, fish, meat, poultry and gourmet goodies covered, but this year we’ve got a great wine selection to share with you too.

With most of us spending more time at home, we hope our mindfully sourced wine selections, ever expanding recipe section and new range of restaurant quality food to go will help you to eat and drink better and more delicious food at home.

Our cellar now features over 30 white and red wines, 4 rosé, 8 top quality sparkling wines, 3 champagnes, 3 low alcohol and 2 zero alcohol sparkling teas.  This selection changes regularly in line with produce availability and seasonality.

If you fancy a bespoke wine selection designed around your personal tastes, you are of course welcome to create your own case by chatting to our in-house wine expert, Penny.

The Sensational with Seafood Case

£110

Our “Sensational with Seafood” mixed 6 represents white wines from Sandys’ Cellar carefully paired to all the fishy goodies we have to offer.

Full description

Let’s start with three lovely sparkling wines all made in the traditional method and representing excellent quality and value when compared to champagne.

In the Loire region of France we’ve selected a sparkling Muscadet which is fantastic with oysters! Jérémie Huchet’s La Bretesche is zesty with notes of fresh sourdough and anise on the palate and has a lovely saline finish. The wine has seen some lees ageing which gives extra texture and creaminess.

Heading over to the Burgundy now for Jean-Charles Boisset’s JCB No 21, a wonderful blend of Pinot Noir and Aligoté from the Côte d’Or with Chardonnay and Gamay from the Mâcconais. Notes of citrus, white flowers and almonds make this Silver International Wine Challenge 2019 winner an absolutely wonderful alternative to champagne.

A visit to Italy next and the stunning vineyards of Ca’ dei Frati at the southern tip of Lake Garda. Cuvée dei Frati is made from the grape variety Turbiana with a splash of Chardonnay. A ‘metodo classico’ that’s aged on its lees for 36 months it’s an extremely well rounded wine with sumptuous biscuity notes and a creamy texture.

On to our still wine selection and we’re back to the Loire Valley for our first white wine selection which has to be Château du Coing’s St Fiacre Muscadet. It really is the classic match for seafood, especially oysters. This too has some lees ageing to add a creamy richness to its peach, green apple and lemon notes. With a mineral edge on the finish, it also has a slight pétillance. Onto Spain now and the most northerly subzone of Rias Baixas on the Atlantic Coast. Mar de Frades Albariño Atlantico exudes citrus, salt, mango, lychee and a dash of lime. A very seafood friendly wine, it’s also lovely as an aperitif.

Our last seafood and wine stop is Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast of Italy. Poggio al Tesoro is a stunning vineyard producing an equally stunning wine. ‘Solosole’ Vermentino has a lovely succulent, creamy texture with aromas of yellow plums, apricots and white flowers. It’s great with seafood but can also hold its own with creamier dishes such as risotto and white meats.

The Fireside Reds Case

£97.50

Not going out as much isn’t such a bad thing when you’ve got a roaring fire and a nice glass of red. We’ve popped our favourite fireside red into a mixed 6. From Australia to Spain, France to Italy, we’ve got the cosy evening in covered.

Starting in Yecla in south-eastern Spain, Familia Castaño ‘Solanera’ Viñas Viejas is a blend of old vine Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha Tinta. With plenty of ripe black fruit, blueberries and acacia flowers, it’s intense but also soft and elegant.

Moving up to north west of Spain our next choice is the full bodied, velvety Vinea Cigales Crianza from Finca Mueum in Castilla y León. 100% Tempranillo it’s bursting with red berry aromas which continues on the palate with notes of coconut and mocha.

In the north-easterly region of Veneto, Italy we find the Valley of Cellars or Valpolicella in Italian. It is here that the family Allegrini produce the outstanding Palazzo della Torre, a blend of the grape varieties Corvina, Rondinella and Sangiovese. Lots of wonderful aromas and flavours of cherry, dark chocolate, cloves and vanilla are present in this modern take on the ‘ripasso’ winemaking method.

Off to France now for a visit to the Haut-Medoc in the region of Bordeaux. Les Hauts de Perganson is a smooth, rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Red and black berries notes mingle with cassis, sweet spices and vanilla to make an incredibly smooth, ready to drink now Bordeaux blend.

Our fifth choice is a gold medal winner in several international wine shows from the wonderful d’Arenberg winery in McLaren Vale, South Australia. The High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon is a full bodied, concentrated red wine with layers of blackcurrant, plum and red pepper with some lovely tertiary notes of cedar and violets.

Last but not least, Ben Glaetzer’s fantastic wine Wallace. A blend of Shiraz and Grenache from the Barossa Valley in South Australia, it comes from vines between 60 and 100 years old. This site specific wine is made in small volumes only. Super smooth and extremely easy drinking, it also has a lot going on! Redcurrant, cranberry, cherry and blueberry fruit combine with licquorice, spice and rose petal. The Wallace along with all the wines in this selection, have great cellaring potential if you can bear to lock them away!

Noel Coward drank it for breakfast, Coco Chanel in and out of love and Napoleon in victory and defeat.  We agree with them all, there’s always a good reason to open a bottle of bubbly! Christmas and New Year are two of the best reasons to open a few bottles and to give the gift of bubbles especially when combined with a seafood platter.

We love these duo gift sets and hope you do too! Both our 2 bottle gift sets come in a lovely presentation pack, as modelled by Leo, to make gifting even easier.

The lovely people at Devaux are Pinot Noir specialists and award winners. Their winemaker Michel Parisot was awarded Chef de Cave (Best Sparkling Winemaker) at the 2020 International Wine Challenge.

Bottle 1: The Grande Réserve is predominantly Pinot Noir but has some chardonnay added to compliment the rich finesse of the 69% Pinot Noir blend. Ripe apples and yellow plum aromas develop further on the palate with notes of vanilla and brioche.

Bottle 2: The Cuvée Rosée is fine and creamy with plenty of red berry aromas, notes of hazelnut and violet on the palate and a long finish.

Both are aged on their fine lees for 36months.
